You've had them, I've had them and hopefully
you delete them. I'm talking about those scamming letters from some African
dictatorship country pleading for assistance to liberate Millions of dollars
from the country. What do you get from it - a percentage (normally about
10%) of the funds. Sounds too good to be true ? Well it is - wake up and
smell the coffee.
This email originally came in to me from Des Dog (of Solomon
fame) who got it from someone else - Thanks Peter.
I opted to start using Dr Cox A. Floppin for a laugh to see if anyone
would actually bite. If you don't get the joke it goes along the lines
of ...I see that Viagra has to be referred to now as its full chemical
name - Mycoxafloppin.

Title : A dying mans plea
Dear friend,
Greetings to you in the name of our heavenly God.
This mail might come to you as a surprise and the temptation to ignore
it as unserious could come into your mind; but please, consider it a divine
wish and accept it with a deep sense of humility. My name is Scot harry.
I am British living in Dubai (United Arab Emirate). I was a merchant and
owned two businesses in Dubai. I was also married with two children. My
wife and two children died in a car accident six years ago.
Before this happened my business and concern for making money was all
I lived for. I never really cared about other values in life. But since
the loss of my family, I have found a new desire to assist
helpless families. I have been helping orphans in orphanage/ motherless
homes. I have donated some money to orphans in Sudan, South Africa, Cameroon,
Brazil, Spain, Austria, Germany and some Asian countries. Before I became
ill, I kept $15 Million
in a long-term deposit account in a finance company . Presently, I?m in
a hospital where I have been undergoing treatment for
oesophageal cancer. I have since lost my ability to talk and my doctors
have told me that I have only a few months to live. It is my last wish
to see this money distributed to charity organizations. Because relatives
and friends have plundered so much of my
wealth since my illness, I cannot live with the agony of entrusting this
huge responsibility to any of them. Please, I beg you in the name of God
to help me collect the deposit and the interest accrued
from the company and distributes it amongst charity organizations. Use
your judgement to distribute the money and feel free to reimburse yourself
when you have the money for any cost you
incur during the process of collecting and distributing the money to charity
organizations.
I?m willing to offer you a reward If you are willing to help; please reply
as soon as you can. May the good Lord bless you and your family. please
reply me through this
email address:xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Regards,
Scot harry.

I don't know if it's just me but I never actually read these fully -
I scan them and the just of the first note is blah blah blah, Ive got
lots of money and I want to give you it, blah blah blah.
This one's based seemingly in Dubai (see Solomon)
so might have some fun.. |
Scot,
I read your plight with great interest and was saddened to hear that you've
got cancer - not exactly the best thing to have.
I'm willing to assist you in anyway I can - please advise what I can do
to help.

Cox

I can think of plenty of other things I'd like to give him the scamming

succesfull, and I have only just been freed to access the hospital internet

the money to charity related works.

I need these details to give to my attorney to prepare a power of attorney
authorizing you to claim the money on my behalf. I will also send to you
the deposit slip. after tyhis is done, I will contact the bank in London
and inform them that you are the new beneficiary of the funds in my name
in their vault.
Please forgive my bad typing, I had to type this letyter myself, because
of the huge amount of Money involved. I give you my word that after you
bring the details requested, I will go ahead with only you, because as
soon as the power of attorney is prepared, you are regarded as the new
beneficiary of the money in the vault. I await your reply.

Scot -
I tried clicking on the site without success..
I've cut and pasted it for you to check... http://www.firstchoice,net/
When I click on it I get something about a bad gateway...
On another matter - I like to see whom I'm dealing with (you also forgot
to give me your telephone number). I've had people send me pictures in
the past of other people - please send me by return a photograph of yourself
holding a sign with my name on it so I know whom I'm dealing with. The
sign should read my whole name - MyCox A. Floppin.
I've attached one of me taken this morning with my pride and joy - A Delorean.
If you could do the same in return it would be appreciated.
It's the weekend here so I won't be in to pick up my emails till monday

- I hope it's not ill health thats keeping you away from the PC ?

We'll he's not exactly quick to progress this
one is he... I wonder how many other scams he's got running.. |
1st May
Scot,
I hope this email finds you in fair fettle and you're on the road to recovery.
I've been onto the bank and created an account as they requested - I've
heard nothing since though.
How long were you in Dubai for - I'd been thinking about having a holiday
there for a few years now but have never got the chance to visit the country.
I'm still thinking about going this year. Any hints and tips you can provide
me would be great.
Looking forward to receiving your picture you promised me with my full
name on it. - I will then know I can trust you.
Regards
Mycox
|
Lets see how much he actually knows about Dubai... lets start gently. |
Dear Cox,
I am gradually picking up,how are you doing?how is your family?hope they
are fine?well i have been in dubai for more than 30yrs,dubai is a very
nice place to be,the people are very hospitable, infact i have not for
one day regreted my stay there.i pray i survives this sickness and get
back to dubai i will invite you .as i did promised you,i will send you
my picture very soon. Thanks for your concern towards my ailment.God bless
you.
Yours sincerely
Scot harry.
|
Oh yes, you've promised me the picture but I still don't have it, nor
do I have your telephone number yet..
All his emails are now coming in with the header being GOD BLESS YOU..Perhaps
he things I'm sneezing all the time ? |
3rd May
Scot,
How is your condition ? Improving any ?
I did get a copy of an email which basically confirmed the bits I had
filled in on the form for them. I've not heard anything else from them
yet - no email nor no voicemail. It's a public holiday here in the UK
so they may have sent a fax to my private number which I'll collect tommorow
in the office.
I'd love to be invited to Dubai as it sounds like a wonderful location.
I await your picture with baited breathe - when will you be able to send
it to me, also is there a telephone number I can call you on there as
I would like to put a voice to the picture once I get it.
Regards
Mycox
|
I got a copy of the information that I posted on the banks form - If
I posted it here it would give away all the information I've had to provide.
Probably not worth ready it..
C'mon you scammer - send me the picture oh and your telephone number.. |
Two faxes are sent to me by the "bank"
Oooo look official documents - with kwality stamps on them...
|
Jist of the faxes - open an account - send
us money to do it.. we'll give you all your money... yeh right. |
4th May
Scot,
I hope you're recovering well. I'm annoyed that I've not heard from you
over the last couple of days and more importantly I've still not received
any photograph that you had promised.
I have heard from the bank - they've sent a couple of faxes which I picked
up this morning.
Since I don't have an address in Spain there are charges that I have to
pay to open an account - (which seem excessive) - this amount is 12,500
Euros which I think is about £7,000. I hope to give them a call
later today to discuss this.
It will take me a day or two to collect the funds required to open the
account. I would appreciate it from a piece of mind basis that you can
furnish me with your photograph prior to me paying this money by bank
transfer.
Regards
Mycox
|
What do they think I am - rich ?
|
Just as an aside - I did an IP lookup on his
IP address since he's supposed to be in Spain, this is the listing of
the IP address that came in on his emails
address: No-2, Sakponba Road
address: Benin City, Edo state
address: Nigeria
phone: +234-52-450-888
fax-no: +234-52-450-952
So it's Spain is it Mr Harry ? Lying sod !!
|
|
Dear Dr Cox,
i am sorry for not responding to your previous mail,i had been very down
for some days now, thank God my condition seems to be improving.i thank
God that you have been contacted by my bank i would advise you to comply
with the banks directives.as regard my picture i have made arrangement
with a nurse in my hospital to get me a photograher to snap me so that
i can forward it to you.thanks for your concern about by health.God bless
you and your family abundantly.
Sincerely
Scot Harry.
|
Amazingly enough he seems to have regular access to the web as soon as
I send an email. Must be a great hospital he's in - I know in the NHS
in the UK you would be lucky to get a cup of tea never mind having Internet
access. I wonder if he'll explain how he gets that if I ask him. |
| Scot, Thank you for keeping me abreast of
your situation - I've tried to call the bank without success - I think
our telephone lines are having problems on international calls.
I'm glad you've got access to the Internet from the hospital - is
it a free service they offer or do you have to pay for it - if so, what
does it cost per minute. In the UK the NHS I dont believe offer this service.
I've just about sorted the money - probably be sorted by tommorow
night or Thursday morning at the latest.
I need to talk to the bank as they've only got a part of my first
name, they've got me listed as Dr Cox where my first name is actually
MyCox (people call me Cox though) so I'll have to get that changed.
I remind you of my trivial request of a photograph with you holding
a sign with my full name on it - MyCox A Floppin. I look forward to receiving
it.
Regards
Cox
|
|
5th May
Dear Cox,
Find attached my photograph you requested for.thanks for all your concern
to my ill health.i think you have been able to talk twith the bank as
regard your name, where you able to correct it?i would like to know if
your account have been credited.thanks and God bless you.
Best regard
Scot Harry.

|
Ooo look a photo, admittingly it's done rather well - I had to look closely
to see where they had written the name on the image. You can click the
image and get a larger image to view.
Who ever this is - does indeed look ill. A couple of giveaways though
- look at the bandage on the guys left hand - it's filthy - not exactly
hygenic is it for a hospital, the second and more obvious mistake is the
letter that's sitting on the arm of the settee has a UK postmark on it.
The address is too vague to make out even on the original picture which
was twice the size of the enlarged one here.
Oh and my names not very clear... |
Scot,
Apologies for not responding sooner - I have been in Brussels obtaining
some of the funds required from my account there - which I've now got.
I got your photograph - thank you but as I asked for clearly - I wanted
to see my full name there - it seems to be partially covered up - If you
can take another with my full name - MyCox A. Floppin it would be appreciated.
This picture looks like CA Floppin ! Once I've got this I'll happily transfer
the banks requirements to them to open the account.
Thanks in advance and I hope you're recovering well.
MyCox
|
I was actually away for a couple of days in Brussels hence lack of communication.
Wonder what his excuse will be to this.. |
Dear Dr Cox,
I am presently down with my ailment,i think i am not responding to treatment
any longer,i dont think i can snap now,the doctor was not happy to hear
that i arranged a photographer to come into the hospital to snap me,he attributed
my present situation to the stress i under go while trying to snap and scan
my photo to you,he has thus instructed that no camera what so ever should
be taken into my room until there is relative improvement on my falling
health situation.i would want you to please comply with the bank in other
for your account to be credited while i am still alive.i will send another
photo to you as soon my health improves.
I await your reply.
sincerely
Scot harry.
|
Quite a good answer...considering someone who's in the last throws of
death. |
7th May
Scot,
I hear what you're saying but you have not satisfied my requirements with
regard to the photograph - I would sack your photographer as he's cut
your head off. I'd apprecate by return a decent photograph as per my original
request before proceeding. - Full Name !
I have the money ready now - I at the advice of my financial advisor had
it withdrawn as US DOllars to take advantage of the dropping US exchange
rate. I took these photos on my phone so they're a bit grainy.
Wishing you the best for a swift recovery..

Lets see if some pictures of the cash bring him out... |
8th May
Scot,
I hope this note finds you well - I'm concerned that I've not heard from
you yet. I came into the office today especially to check my emails and
voicemail to see if you'ld called but no.
Do you have a telephone number there as I'd like to speak with you prior
to calling the bank on Monday morning.
Regards
Mycox
|
I sent this at about 1pm - and within minutes got a rejection message
- someones obviously alerted yahoo to him and closed his account.
Looks like I'll have to wait for him to contact me or try and contact
the bank and they're bound to know what email account he's now on - even
though they should have nothing to do with him as they're dealing with
me and don't know him from Jack. |
Sent to the bank 8th May
Sir / Madam,
I'm making an enquiry regarding payment into an account that you
recently setup for me.
Your fax which I received mentioned the some of 12,500 Euros, I was
wondering can I pay this amount in Dollars as I have that to hand.
I've also got a small problem with my partner whom for the time being
his email address does not seem to be working so I cannot make contact
with him. I've got to get something from him prior to me sending the money
to the account. Until I hear from him I'm afraid that payment will be
delayed.

now by rights they should not have any contact with Scot, we'll see.
I can see them pushing to the money anyway regardless of my lack of communication
with Scot |
8th May 2004
Dear Cox,
i have really under gone stress in trying to satisfy you.i will advise
you to do all necessary things under your power to see that my funds get
into your account at the earliest possible time, the most important thing
to me now is for the funds to get into your account so that you can start
disbursing it to the less privilege ones and some charitiy homes befor
i die,i dont see any possibity of me staying alive more than some few
weeks.i await your reply.God bless you and your family.
Yours sincerely

There are a couple of things worry me about the series of pictures.
I've summarised them below |
Image concerns.
Image 1 : This one
1. This guy is obviously not Nigerian. Came as a bit of a shock to me.
2. The guy seems not to be kind of shocked to be holding a piece of paper.
3. The image seems to be cropped (perhaps it was just initially taken
as panoramic)
4. For being in Spain - the letter definitely has a UK postmark - pity
about the address
5. If he's in a hospital the bandage is filthy.
Image 2 : This One
1. The same guy (now clean shaven) still doesn't really know whats going
on.
2. His bandage is still filthy.
My own thoughts here are that Scot Harry is actually in Nigeria (from
his IP address), he does however have contacts in other locations (including
the UK). His contact in the UK works in a care home (or somewhere similar)
and has talked one of his patients into posing with a bit of paper to
obtain a whitemans picture (and thus keeping with the story of Scot Harry
being British). The care worker takes the photographs during a cigarette
break as it would be less conspicious. (Spot the ashtray). Any other theories
would be appreciated - email them here
and I'll post the most interesting theories.
As it stands at the moment - I'm trying with the assistance of a UK contact
to get the police involved as it obviously involves a UK contact.
I'll keep you advised..
|
|
Okay, to appease Pyeman and anyone else
who's interested in whats happened.
As normal when you try and get the police involved
it comes to nothing. Obviously too busy putting film in their cash cow
speed cameras to do anything about real crime..
Me - bitter, oh no... )
I continued the conversations in the background without
posting here (that and a couple of days away).. So I'll continue where
I left off..
|
|
8th May
Scot,
Many thanks for the picture. I tried to go to the Western Union office
today without success as they were closed. There is another one several
miles away but I've got my birthday party this afternoon which I've got
lots of guests turning up.
Out of curiosity - what is your date of birth ?
I'll visit the Western Union office tommorow and advise the bank. I did
send them an email but as yet they have not replied - probably because
it's the weekend..
Do you have a telephone number I can call you and advise that the account
has been setup ?
Wishing you a safe recovery.
Regards
MyCox |

11th May

Happy birthday to you, hope you had a nice celebration?i hope by now my
funds have gotten into your account.please let me know because i have
some charity homes to which i want you to give some money to.my health

|
Scot,
Many thanks for the greetings - the day was excellent..
I've been trying to contact the bank since Saturday to confirm with them
how they expect payment - Dollars or Euros and no-one has responded to
my emails, nor have I been unable to contact them on the telephone - the
number is not valid.
I've tried all day yesterday without success on the telephone.
Thank you for your pictures that you send - you look like you were recovering
in the images. The first photo that you sent was very grainy - could you
ask the photographer if he's got the original higher resolution image
- that way I'll be able to see the change in your facial features. The
clean shave helped.
I'll let you know when the bank get in touch - or I get in touch with
them.
Is there a number I can contact you on ?
Regards
Mycox
Sent to the bank...
Greetings,
No-one from your organisation has answered my request. I'm ready to make
payment but need to know if you will accept Dollars instead of Euros ?
Regards
Cox
|
I did
I'm really only asking this to see if I can get a high image scan of
the picture so I can try to read the address on the envelope on the armrest. |
F.A.O. John Williams
John,
You requested that I provide to you the details of the money transfer
via email. Our Email system has been down for almost the whole day hence
I've been unable to send you this. Again I tried calling without success.
I've sent as requested seperate payments totaling the 12,500 Euros to
the people detailed on your fax.
1 - 3000 Euros to Sanja Frankola
2 - 3000 Euros to Maria Chielo Flores Tabernila
3 - 3000 Euros to Josh Khalid Habib
4 - 3000 Euros to Yalem Medressa Girmay
5 - 500 Euros to Sanja Frankola
The answer to the test question on the form is Lister.
Please let me know that you have received the funds...
Regards
Mycox
|
So I called up the bank - requesting to
speak to Dr John Williams (who funnily enough is never there) but I spoke
to a guy called Colins to whom I explained my predicament - no-one answering
my emails and I urgently needed to send him money but nobody answers...
He gave me another email address (his personal one) to send the details
to...and advised that I needed to send the money as soon as possible..
(greedy sod).
Thought I'ld annoy them by sending them the amounts but not the MTCN
numbers that they need.
Lister is our current Guide Dog..(black lab with a mind of his own, but
he's gradually getting there)..

with our local Guide Dog branch to discuss what requirements they have
for charitable donations and they've confirmed they would like discuss
this further once I have an idea of what sums of money are involved in
these donations.
I got an email this morning from the bank requesting more information
on the transfer which I have provided to them ( a copy is below)

What number can I call you on to discuss the payments that you want to
go to the charities you mentioned as well as the local Guide Dogs.

I did use photoshop to generate some high quality scans of the receipts..
Quickly thrown together they might hold him back for a period of time..
And just to keep Mr Harry happy... |
Dear Dr Cox,
Thanks for all the detail information sent to me as regards the payment.could
you please send me the receipt of the payments so that i can hand it over
to my lawyer for documentation purpose. you can also find other charitable
homes outside london too.thank God i will be able to witness some of the
donations befor i die,i am very happy.may the good lord bless you abundantly
for finding time to put smiles in the faces of the less priviledged ones
around us.
I await the scanned receipt of payment from you so that i can hand it
over to my lawyer, before any thing strange happens to me.i must say at
this juncture that my health condition is not improving at all but all
the same i thank God for making me find a God fearing man like you.
Sincerely
Scot Harry.

Why does he want the receipts...? They're no use to him in Nigeria -
unless he's playing on getting the receipts from me, to forward to the
bank.. A two pronged approach - nice... |

Oh oh - it's the two pronged approach again...
|
I called Colins up to explain that I'd been to another
WU office and been given the same information that he had - the money
did not exist. When I went back to the original WU office and spoke to
the manager he had apologised and had retrieved the money and transferred
it back using some new numbers. I offered to send these via email but
he wanted the original receipts faxed immediatly. I said I would try and
fax them to him. Not having a fax machine at home is a bit of a pain but
I've never really needed one in the past so I'm not going to start now.
It's Friday morning and I dream up some solution on how to over come this
and also get them to visit the WU for another time... :)

20th May
Colin,
I heard an article on the news this morning about fraudulent transfers
at a Western Union office. It's the one I went to as it's in Central london.
I've found this on the BBC website which relates to it. I've got an appointment
with the Met Police this afternoon to try and get my money back.
This explains why no other Western Union office could get the money out.
!!!
I'll keep you posted on how I get on..

Cox

Not bad for five minutes work I think. |
Scot,
The bank were having difficulties obtaining the money I had sent them,
and after various visits to the Western Union offices I heard an article
on the radio today about fraud at the Western Union office I used... I've
found this on the bbc website...
I've got an appointment with the Met POlice this afternoon to try and
get my money back (it does sound hopeful). I'll keep you advised.
Hope you're recovering well..
Regards
Mycox |
